Fall el-cheapo handy hints

Is there a slightly crooked hanging picture that seems to mock you every time you walk past it? Take it down and add a dollop or two of hot glue on one or both lower corners (on the back). After they cool off, when you hang the picture back up, you’ll find it easier to straighten out the picture.

This is an old trick germ-fearing travelers use when staying in hotels: Place the TV remote control in a ziplock baggie. You might want to do this if you’re tired of meticulously cleaning peanut butter or crumbs from the various nooks and crannies. If you’re into aesthetics, you can place the remote in a couple layers of plastic wrap and use a hair dryer “shrink-wrap” it.

Tired of searching for the TV remote control? Use hook and loop tape (commercial name: Velcro) to hang the remote on the side of your kitchen table leg, coffee table, book shelf, or other convenient place.

You can wrap the business end of a butter- or dull-bladed knife with a disinfecting wipe or thin microfiber cloth and run it between the stove and countertop in order to pry out lingering food. (You might find that paper towels tear too easily.) If the gap between the stove and counter is sizable, consider getting a length of clear plastic tubing and jamming it in there. Lowes and Home Depot carry such tubing in various widths.

If you use dryer sheets, don’t toss them after you empty the dryer. They can be used to attract and remove the dust from TV and computer screens.

One nice way to remember someone (and save money)—if you happen to be shopping for new eyeglasses—is to have your prescription lenses placed into their old frames.

How are you currently storing your belts, scarves, ties, and other slim accessories? Hang them on a hanger—get a bunch of shower/curtain rings from the dollar store and attach them to the rung of a plastic hanger. Then you can slide on your belts, scarves, etc, one to a ring. This is a great way to save space and still choose, take down, and return easily.

I went to two stores looking for brown sugar and came up with nothing. When I asked a store employee if they were going to get any more soon, she said that she didn’t know. She then did a quick search on her phone and told me that I could simply mix white sugar and molasses to make brown sugar. I was shocked to hear that, but since I was buying some white sugar anyway, I had no problem buying a $4 jar of molasses. She was right! You can add .75 teaspoon of molasses to ¼ cup of white sugar OR 1½ teaspoon teaspoon molasses to ½ cup of white sugar OR 1 tablespoon molasses to 1 cup of white sugar, depending on the recipe.
