Every year, Keep Durham Beautiful (KDB) coordinates cleanups, volunteer workdays, and water/trail explorations during Durham Creek Week (this year, Saturday, March 18–Saturday, March 25). If you’re interested in discovering and protecting our local waterways, click on the Creek Week logo to check out the schedule and to register for each individual event.

  • KDB and the Clean Water Education Partnership are cohosting the GSI Oh My! Scavenger Hunt Saturday, March 18, 7am through Saturday, March 25, 7pm. This competition involves finding examples of Green Stormwater Infrastructure and photographing them, and then posting them on Facebook and Instagram for prizes.   • The Durham County Stormwater Virtual Scavenger Hunt will run from Saturday, March 18, 8am through Saturday, March 25, 8pm. Click here to download the contest form and fill it out for a chance to win a prize.

  • The Third Fork Cleanup at Lakewood Avenue will take place on Saturday, March 18, 9am–noon, at 420 W Lakewood. Volunteers are needed for this litter cleanup. Click here for more info and to register.

  • Saturdays at 17-Acre Wood will take place on March 18, 9:30am–noon. Volunteers are needed to remove invasive species (weeds) at this nature preserve. Everyone will meet at 1900 Maryland Ave; click here for more info and to register.

  • The Twin Lakes Cleanup will take place on Saturday, March 18, 10am–noon, at Twin Lakes Park (439 Chandler Rd). Volunteers are needed for this litter cleanup; pickup sticks, tools, and boats will be provided. Click here for more info and to register.

  • The Lower Eno River Discovery Paddle will be held on Saturday, March 18, 1–4pm, and will start on the Eno River Boat Launch on Red Mill Rd. Enjoy paddling along the Eno River and keep an eye out for wading birds, deer, turtles, and more. The cost is $40; click here for more info and to register.

  • The Ellerbe Trestle Cleanup will take place on Sunday, March 19, 8:30am–noon. Volunteers are needed to pick up litter on land and in the water from Red Mill Rd down to Falls Lake. Bring your own boat or sign up to borrow a Frog Hollow canoe. Everyone will meet at 3622 Red Mill Rd; click here for more info and to register.

  • Self-Guided Canoe and Kayak Trips on the Lower Eno River will take place on Sunday, March 19, noon–5pm. Enjoy a boating adventure on the Eno River. Kayaks and standup paddleboards are available for single paddlers and canoes are available for two paddlers (plus a nonpaddler in the middle). Trips of 2.5 hours are $30 and 4-hour trips are $40 per boat. Click here for more info and to register.

  • The Ellerbe Creek and Plant Walk at Walltown Park will take place on Sunday, March 19, 1–3pm. Volunteers are needed to pick up litter; after they’re done, Vito Di Bona and members of the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association will lead a tour of the park’s beautiful plants. Everyone will meet at 1700 Guess Rd; click here for more info and to register.

  • The Martin Luther King Jr Parkway Cleanup will take place on Sunday, March 19, 1–3pm. Volunteers are needed to pick up litter around the area around Cook Rd. Everyone will meet in the former Wendy’s parking lot (910 Martin Luther King Jr Pkwy); click here for more info and to register.

  • The Spring Equinox Sunrise Hike will take place on Monday, March 20, 7–8am. Celebrate the first day of spring with a hike starting at West Point on the Eno’s Environmental Education Pavilion (5253 N Roxboro). Click here for more info and to register.

  • The Bald Eagle Paddle will take place on Monday, March 20, 8am–noon. Experienced kayak paddlers are invited to enjoy this 4-hour exploration of Jordan Lake in search of the nesting areas of the local bald eagles. The cost is $50; everyone will meet at 280 State Park Rd, in Apex. Click here for more info and to register.

  • The Panther Creek Cleanup will take place on Tuesday, March 21, 9am–noon. Join Friends of the Mountains to Sea in a litter cleanup near Redwood Rd. Click here for more info and to register.

  • The Bioretention Tour will be given on Tuesday, March 21, 11am–noon, at the General Services Building (2011 Fay St). Learn how the City’s bioretention cell filters stormwater runoff as part of a green stormwater infrastructure project that removes pollutants in order to improve water quality and benefit pollinators.   • The Lake Michie Personal Motor Boat Cleanup will take place on Wednesday, March 22, noon–4pm. Volunteers are invited to use their boats to help clean up trash and litter in and around the lake. Trash bags and pickup sticks will be provided. Everyone will meet at the Lake Michie Boating Area (2801 Bahama Rd, in Bahama); click here for more info and to register.

  • The Lake Michie Paddle on Cleanup will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 2–4pm. Volunteers are needed to pick up trash and litter in and around the lake with the help of canoes and kayaks provided by Durham Parks and Recreation. Everyone will meet at the Lake Michie Boating Area (2801 Bahama Rd, in Bahama); click here for more info and to register.

  • Both Water Testing for Tweens and Fix a Leak Week for Adults at the Library will be held at the Main Library (300 N Roxboro St) on Wednesday, March 22, 4–5pm. Tweens (ages 9 to 12) are invited to collect water samples from around the City; they’ll meet in the MakerLab on the first floor. At the same time, their parents/guardians/grands are invited to learn how to monitor their homes for leaks and also how to deal with common water issues.   • Durham Community Day at the Museum of Life & Science (433 Murray Ave) is Thursday, March 23, 10am–3pm. Durham residents are invited to explore the museum free of charge, with educational talks in the Butterfly House and on the Wetland Deck.

  • The next Eno River Association Workday will be Saturday, March 25, 9am–noon. Join other volunteers from the Eno River Association as they tidy up and improve the area along the river. Click here for more info and to register.

  • The next Bioretention Workday will take place on Saturday, March 25, 9am–noon. Join Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association staff as they maintain the bioretention cells in the Pearl Mill Nature Preserve (700 Markham Ave). Click here for more info and to register.

  • The New Hope Creek Bottomlands Trail Cleanup will take place on Saturday, March 25, 10am–noon. Volunteers are needed to help pick up trash and litter along the trail. Everyone will meet in Old Chapel Hill Road Park (3791 Southwest Durham Dr); click here for more info and to register.

  • A Women’s Kayaking 101 class will be offered on Saturday, March 25, 11:30am–3:30pm (age 14+). Everyone will meet at the Hickory Hill Boat Ramp on Redwood Rd. The cost is $50; all gear will be provided. Click here for more info and to register.

  • Two Sisters will host a Sunset Float on Falls Lake on Saturday, March 25, 6:30–8:30pm. Paddle your rented kayak or canoe a short distance to a great spot for viewing a beautiful sunset. The cost is $30; click here for more info and to register.

  • A Northeast Creek Cleanup will take place on Sunday, March 26, noon–2pm. Volunteers are needed to help pick up litter along the creek off Hwy 54. Everyone will meet at the Chick-fil-A (104 Residence Inn Blvd); click here for more info and to register.
